This argument aims to highlight how difficult it was for the Israelites to spend 40 years moving from Egypt to the Promised Land, a distance of about 613 kilometers. Compared to the usual calculation, it seems as if they walked a very short distance in a day, which is "inconceivable." however, there are biblical and historical facts that can provide clarification on this matter. Biblical answers may include the following:
1. Spiritual Purpose and Not an Ordinary Journey
the journey of the Israelites from Egypt was not only about physical distance but it was a spiritual journey and learning. God intended to teach and prepare them to be his holy nation. in Deuteronomy 8:2, God says that he made the Israelites walk in the desert for 40 years to test them and see if they would obey him.
memory of Torah 8:2: "And you will remember all the way that the Lord, your God, led you these forty years in the desert, so that he might challenge you, test you, and find out what is in your heart, whether you will keep his commandments or not."
therefore, it was not just a journey to the Promised Land, but a journey of change of heart and obedience to God.
2. Counting 40 Years as Punishment for Unbelief
The Bible explains that the Israelites were supposed to enter the Promised Land more quickly, but because of their unbelief and rebellion, God punished them by wandering in the desert for 40 yearsthis happened after the Israelites discovered that the Promised Land was inhabited by giants, and instead of believing God's promise, they gave up and feared. God swore that the entire generation that came out of Egypt would die in the desert before entering the Promised Land.
Numbers 14:32-34: "But you, your carcasses will fall in this desert. And your children will be shepherds in the desert for forty years, and pay for your immorality, until your carcasses perish in the desert. by the count of the days you searched for the land, forty days, one day for one year, you will take your sins forty years, and you will know my broken promise."
therefore, 40 years was not because they were walking at a slow pace, but it was a punishment for disbelief and wronging God.
3. Desert Movement and Desert Life
The desert is not an easy place to walk. The Israelites traveled with children, livestock, and baggage. also, they needed to live in the desert for a long time, and therefore they camped for a long time to get food and water. In the desert environment, they depended on God's guidance through cloud by day and fire by night. they also needed to live a normal life, build a community, and take care of their livestock.
Exodus 13:21-22: "The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night. the pillar of cloud did not depart from the people during the day, nor the pillar of fire during the night."
This shows that their journey was guided by God, and they were resting and waiting for God's instructions at certain times.
4. Spiritual Reasons for Slow Travel
during their journey, the Israelites were learning to rely on God and get rid of their old habits of slavery. They often fell into sin and rebelled against God, and this caused them to delay their journey.
from 32 gives an example of how the Israelites fell into sin by making a golden calf when Moses was on Mount Sinai, which caused God's anger and delayed their journey.
Conclusion
the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land was not only about physical distance, but it was a spiritual journey of obedience, training, and learning to rely on God. 40 years was a punishment for their disbelief and rebellion. therefore, it is not a question of walking a few kilometers a day, but it is about God's process of preparing them spiritually and physically for entering the Promised Land.
